St AndrewsThe Royal and Ancient St. Andrews' Golf Club
St Andrews cathedral and castle bear witness to its former importance, while the Royal and Ancient Golf Club is golf's spiritual home. It also has the oldest university in Scotland, an interesting Aquarium, some fine restaurants and an attractive main street.
There are seven courses around St Andrews, the most famous of which is the old course which regularly hosts the Open Championship. All seven courses are public courses but the Old course is the most popular and difficult to secure a tee-time. Although members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club have playing rights on the old course, the majority of tee-times are allocated by public ballot. You can advance book but this needs to be done a year in advance if you want a time in the summer period. Nearly half of the total number of tee times on the Old Course each year are allocated to the daily ballot. It is drawn 48 hours in advance.
