Gardens in Edinburgh City CentreView of the City from Calton Hill
The Old Town of Edinburgh is built on a ridge that rises gradually from the Palace of Holyrood to Edinburgh Castle. There are staircase lanes, called Wynds, that lead off this 'Royal Mile' that give the impression of the city being built on multiple levels and buildings that date from the 11th Century. The New Town is also a World Heritage Site with its mix of Georgian town houses and the earliest examples in Europe of tenement flats. The views to be had from the Castle, Arthur's Seat and Calton Hill are dramatic and inspiring.
Gardens are defined in city areas to include public parks. In addition to the attractions linked below, Private House Stays recommends the following for your consideration: Holyrood Park which contains Arthurs seat (Edinburghs mini-mountain) which is greatly recommended for walking up starting from Holyrood Palace. It usually takes about 50 minutes to ascend and about 25 minutes to descend. Princes Street gardens which run alongside Princes Street from Waverley Bridge to nearly reaching Lothian road. There is a flower clock and it is a good location to watch the trains coming and going from Waverley station. Inverleith park is not especially exciting but does have the perfect view of Edinburgh castle for watching the fireworks that conclude the Edinburgh Festival, usually in the first week of September.
