Loch Ness

Urquhart castle

The beautiful village of Drumnadrochit, 15 miles south of Inverness is home to the World Famous Loch Ness Exhibition Centre. The Exhibition itself has been written, designed and narrated by well known scientist and foremost authority on the subject, Adrian Shine. With 7 themed chambers the Loch Ness Exhibition keeps alive the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster but seeks to give visitors the opportunity to learn about the Loch, its extraordinary depth and its geological significance. The Loch forms part of the Great Glen and the Caledonian Canal.

Nearby Areas:

  • Beauty Spots

Loch Ness is itself a wonderously beautiful place throughout its length, but being part of the Great Glen, the loch itself is surrounded by wonderful woodland walks and the significantly beautiful Kintail & West Affric Nature reserve is just a few miles west of Drumnadrochit. Private House Stays has identified a few of the most beautiful areas as: Balmacaan Wood, Bridge of Oich, Craig Phadrig Forest Walk, Falls of Foyers, Farigaig Forest Centre, Inchnacardoch Forest Walks, Plodda Falls, Strathfarrar National Nature Reserve and Torrachilty Forest Trail

  • Long Distance Walks

The walking around Loch Ness is as good as it gets in Scotland if you want gentle rolling landscape, vibrantly coloured heathers, sun-dappled woods and the picturesque nature of the lochs on the Great Glen. However Loch Ness is also on the Great Glen Way - a long distance walk from Fort William to Inverness that connects with the West Highland Way at Fort William and is not far to connect to the Speyside way at its Northern end. Clunes Forest also has some marked trails for the more ambitious.

    • Marine Trips

Loch Ness is part of the Caledonian Canal route that leads from Inverness down the Great Glen to Fort William. However for those who just want a day out on the water as opposed to a week long boat hire, Jacobite Cruises and Castle Cruises on Loch Ness are two of the available commercial tour operators but there are others.

    • Forest Riding

Just because the land is so open and beautiful, the horse riding around the Loch Ness area is spectacular. Private House Stays has identified Loch Ness Riding near Dores and Riding holiday packages at Borlum Farm near Drumnadrochit

      • Tourist Attractions

You can make up your own mind as to what you think of the Loch Ness monster themed attractions in Drumnadrochit, but there is no doubt of the wonder of Urquhart Castle, which has an incredible location. In addition there is good bird watching at the Loch Ruthven Nature Reserve, a decent Art gallery in Drumnadrochit and an operation called Monster Activities which specialises in Mountain biking and I suspect other extreme sports.
