North HighlandsDawn on the Boochle
The two areas of Caithness and Sutherland form Scotland's northern wilderness, north of Inverness. The scenery varies from wild cliffs and tiny islands to lonely moorland and remote sandy beaches with superb panoramic mountain views, plus tree-lined twisting roads and foaming rivers. Here you'll find dozens of ruined castles and ancient monuments, particularly in the east. There are also lots of golf courses and places where you can fish for salmon and trout. The boggy half of Caithness and Sutherland is known as the Flow Country (from the Old Norse word Floi meaning marshy ground).
The Northern and North-Western seaboards of Scotland are rightly famous for some fantastic beaches and sea-caves, of which Smoo cave is quite fantastic. In our opinion the beauty to be found is for those who apreciate that the area is sparcely populated and you can find peace and tranquillity. You do feel very connected to nature up here and there are beauty spots everywhere. One of the best Nature reserves in Scotland is also located here at Handa Island which requires the catching of a ferry from Tarbet near Scourie, where you will see vast seabird colonies and amazing wild flowers. Nevertheless Private House Stays has identified a few locations for your consideration: Borgie Trails, Cape Wrath, Cassley Waterfall, Eas a Chual Aluinn, Gearchoille Community Wood Trail, Invernaver National Nature Reserve, Loch Eriboll and Sandwood Bay
The tourist attractions identified by Private House Stays are: The Strathnaver Museum, The Rosal Clearance Village, The Dun Dornaigil Broch and The Balnakeil Craft Village
