ObanThe waterfront in oban harbor
Oban is the principle town in Argyll and is the gateway to the Inner Hebrides with ferries leaving regularly to Mull and the smaller islands. Although a relatively small place there are plentiful accommodation options and fish and chips to die for. Easier to access by train than by road, Oban's principle claim to fame is for regularly leading the high school league tables with children that file on and off the ferries in the morning and afternoon.
Kranenburg Fine Arts is the recommended art gallery in Oban and Oban has its own museum which has some nice old photographs of visits by Queen Victoria and the building of the railway line in to the town.
In our opinion the attraction that should be promoted better about staying in Oban is to spend a day taking a trip over to explore the little island of Kerrera just off the coast and South of the town. It is only six miles long and has a great circular walk that takes in the impressive ruined Gylen Castle. You get there via a passenger ferry that leaves from Gallanach, a few miles out of town to the South. It does seem a bit lame to talk about the Oban Fish and chip shops as being a town highlight, but universally the fish is delicious as is the produce from the seafood shack on the harbour pier. Dunollie Castle is a small ruined castle located on a hill north of the town that is in an atmospheric location, McCaigs Tower is certainly a curiosity and Glenfeochan House gardens worth a visit
